I just LOVE tiny baby fingers, toes, belly buttons! They don't stay small for long, so it is such a treat to be asked to photograph them.

Th little guy is so adored! E. has a great mom, who knows what she is doing-even though E. is her first baby. E's dad is super-fun and loves Star Wars Lego- this little man has it made!

In the Spotlight- Ruby Ellen Designs

From the moment I learned about Ruby, and saw her work, I knew that I would love to work with her. Ruby comes from an amazing family of a talented visual artist-and she is no exception. Already a talented and well trained seamstress, Ruby was 17 when she first designed and created a wedding dress.

Ruby's story reminded me of my own mom, who spent many a late night sewing things for my sisters and I. Also, like my mom, Ruby found ways to fit in sewing, design, and alterations around the demands of a family and career.

In May of 2009, Ruby turned her love of sewing and design in to a reality. Ruby Ellen Designs was born! Ruby custom designs each dress she creates, and specializes in flattering the hard-to-fit.

3 Generations | Calgary Family Photographer

This first time I met Miss H., was for her mom's maternity session. Baby C. has since arrived, and he is just as good looking and charming as his big sister. C. was full of smiles for his mom, and I was able to capture quite a few of them.

We were lucky enough to have the session while H & C's aunt and grandma were visiting from far, far away. They are a beautiful family, and it was so fun to see them again!

Doesn't she glow? This bebe may be the fourth and final one for their family, but this momma is beyond thrilled.

Miss C., who I adore, has had a number of years as the "baby" of the family. It's always so interesting to see how the youngest in a family handles the arrival of an addition. If how much C. loves baby dolls is any indication, she'll be dragging the newcomer around soon enough! Just kidding, of course!

HOW SOON SHOULD I BOOK MY SESSION?
As soon as possible. I tend to book up 3-4 weeks in advance.

HOW CAN I PREPARE FOR MY SESSION?
Just make sure your child is ready for the session as well as you can. Naps and meals are important, so be sure you don’t schedule your photo session during naptime! A photo friendly snack is also a good idea for the session time. If you are worried about clothing
options, please see my clothing advice below or the link "What to Wear?".

WHAT CAN I EXPECT AT MY SESSION?
You can expect a fun, relaxed afternoon with a creative photographer. I will get to know your little ones and you so that I can find those moments where your personality is shining through. Sessions are easy and real, don’t feel you need to tell your little one to “smile” for
each photo-I try get a variety of expression and catch the smiles that are not forced.

HOW LONG WILL MY SESSION LAST?
Sessions can last from thirty minutes to two hours. It is recommended that only those who are to be photographed be present during your session. Too many people can distract a child and the photographer. Newborn sessions can last 3 hours or longer.

CAN WE BRING PROPS TO OUR SESSIONS?
Of course! Little ones tend to fall in love with a certain book, toy, or blanket and that is a memory that deserves to be captured! Bring it with and we will work it into a photo. I will bring my own ever-changing collection of props as well, but don’t expect them in every shot. I prefer the photo to be about your loved one, not about the scenery.

WILL YOU DO FORMAL POSED PHOTOS?
I like to present clients with a collection of portraits that reflect them-usually about half posed captures, and the remainder candid.

CAN WE COME TO YOUR STUDIO?
I photograph families and children in natural light locations. I have a list of potential sites and welcome your suggestions! As an alternative to meeting at a park or public venue, I can meet you at your home for truly personalized photographs.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY CHILD IS SICK?
Please reschedule your session as soon as possible if your child is sick. It is not possible to take the fabulous photos you expect when your child is not feeling well. If you discover your little one is not feeling well, call me to reschedule your session.

WHEN WILL I SEE MY IMAGES?
A Sneak Peak, containing a handful of images from your session, will be posted to my blog and facebook business page about a week after your session. You’ll receive your CD and brag book about 2 ½ weeks after your session.

DO YOU PHOTOGRAPH EXTENDED FAMILIES?
While I work best with small families, I can on occasion do large extended family photos. These sessions tend to last much longer and require the participation of all adults to keep the kids happy, so be sure your family is ready for natural light outdoor photography before booking your session.

As her mommy said, little Miss C. was born "not a moment too soon"-just a few days before her Daddy headed off to compete on one of Canada's Olympic bobsleigh teams. I was lucky enough to get to spend a few minutes with them. Charlotte has the greatest newborn skin, and such adorable lips!

Starting today, I'm adding a new feature to the blog, "The Monday Muse". It will be a little bit of everything-my thoughts on photography, an image from the archives that I haven't posted before, or even photography tips.

As some of you know, I spent the first 18 years of my life in Arizona, so Alberta winters don't come naturally to me. This time of year, I'm torn between wishing desperately for spring, and not wanting to wish away any of life's precious moments. To remind myself of some of the beauties of winter, I thought I'd post a quick picture of took of a Southern Alberta sunset about a month ago.

My favorite thing about studio-style sessions is that by nature, the focus is on expressions. Miss R's sweet older brother, J., is such a fun little boy! As I reviewed his pictures after our session, I could help but smile!

What to Wear...

You’ve scheduled the session and are now frozen in confusion; WHAT do we wear to our photo shoot??? Well, we have some suggestions for you. Welcome to…
Looking Good: Your Style
Show me your personality! You are more than just khaki pants and a white dress shirt – show it! If red is your favorite color, wear red. Like stripes? Great! Bring them with you. Simple patterns and bold colors look great on in person AND in photos. Choosing a bold color that is similar to your eye color is an awesome choice too.
Add LAYERS and TEXTURE. Think scarves (light weight or winter weight), hats, jackets, blazers, ties, denim, knits and corduroy. Long sleeves under short sleeves, leggings under skirts/dresses. Fun shoes like tall boots or sassy heels. A variety of textures will give your photos some extra punch to go with your great smile.
Be a head turner. Wear the blazer that fits just right. Or that dress that makes you feel like a million bucks. It’s a fact; clothes that make you feel good make you LOOK good. If you have the option, why not wear something that makes you want to smile?
Avoid logos, bold patterns and character-wear. Leave Dora and Diego at home. Character-wear and logos may be precious in person but will leave you clueless in twenty years when you look back on your photos and try to figure out who that is on your child’s shoes. Keep it timeless and focused on your faces, not your clothes.
Along the same lines, pick clothing that fits nicely. It should be neither too tight nor too loose. The clothes should hang on the bodies well, without folding or creasing. And always dress for full-length shots, which means socks and shoes that also match and are in good shape. A lot of times barefoot is best, weather permitting.
Of special note:
Kids: Think personality. Cheerful, fun prints, polka dots, stripes, camo; whatever showcases who they really are. Add some layers and texture (maybe even a tutu, pettiskirt or tie) and voila! Instant photographic art. Most kids aren’t comfortable in formal dress and occasionally it can show in their pictures. So, if you have your heart set on your little angel in a suit and tie or an elaborate party dress, make sure to bring a second outfit that is more casual and comfortable.
Families & Couples: Coordinating but not matching. Don’t over-match! The whole group does not have to wear black t’s and denim. Why not shake it up a bit and show some of who each person is as an individual within the whole? Mom should be the belle of the ball in a dress/skirt or fashionable jeans and ideally, heels! Make sure everyone dresses at the same level of formality; either all dressy or all casual, in similar or complimentary color tones. Examples could be earth tones, jewel tones, sky blue and chocolate brown, etc.
Maternity & Newborn: Be who you are. For maternity, we suggest some simple basics: jeans with a real waist, tight tops that hug the belly, a beautiful dress or flowing skirt and a flattering, comfortable, yet attractive, bra/cropped top/sweater, possibly with a beautiful print. After all, most of this session will be all about the belly. For your precious newborn, au naturale, or just a diaper, is best. We want to capture those beautiful bellies, tiny toes and tooshies. If you have a special outfit be sure to have that ready to go as well. Props work well with newborns too; hats, baskets, bowls, etc.

-Please plan an a little extra time at the beginning and end of the session for equipment set up.

With good reason, too- what a cutie! Gentry is just one, but already says about 30 words! It was a pretty cold day, but Gentry was quite the sport, even though he was shivering a bit at the end!

Recently I had the chance to do a mini session to capture baby Brinley in her blessing dress. I loved every minute of it. Not only is she ADORABLE, but her mommy was baptized in this very dress when she was a baby. One of the things I cherish about photography is the power is has to capture details that symbolize connections in our lives.

Payment, by cash or check, is due at the conclusion of the session.

Planning for the Session
What to wear?
-Pick something you feel great in!
-Select clothes that reflect your family's style, and your location of choice, whether more casual, contemporary or formal.
-The clothing doesn't have to match perfectly, but make sure that the style of the clothes is the same. (Ex.-avoid mixing dress shirts with casual t-shirts.)
-A good rule of thumb is to include only colors that would work well together on a single outfit. What not to wear:
-Stripes and clothes with bold logos don't usually photograph well. Family members are free to change clothing for their individual portraits (changing facilities may be limited depending on venue.

Life happens! If you need to change the date or time of your session, please contact me as soon as possible. For changes that are not related to illness or emergency, a minimum of 48 hour notice is required.

The Day of the Session
To help you feel happy and relaxed, please give yourself ample time to travel and park. The time of your session will be booked to take advantage of the most flattering light. Please be aware that if you arrive 20 or more minutes late, your session will not be extended beyond the scheduled time slot.

If you typically feel stressed when being photographed, try listening to your favorite music as you drive to the session. For most people, this works like a charm to help them relax and get ready to have fun!

After Your Session
With your permission, a selection of you images will be posted on my blog in the week following your session. You will receive the CD approximately 2 1/2 weeks after your session date.

As a courtesy, I am happy to guide you through the print ordering process. An up-to-date price list and instructions will be included with your CD.

Posting of Images on the Web: The terms of Facebook, and many similar sites, dictate that all uploaded images become the property of the site. For this reason, your disk will contain images that have a corner "watermarked" with my company logo. This allows you to post images, and protects my work as a photographer.

The images from your session will be archived. If you require a replacement CD, the cost will $20.
